Mita's Website

Mita Mahato is an artist and educator working primarily with cut paper and collage within the comics medium. She assembles fragments of used and discarded materials in poetic experiments that dramatize entangled processes of death and renewal, specifically within the context of ecosystemic loss under capitalism. Her collected book of poetry comix, In Between, is listed in The Best American Comics: The Notable Comics of 2019. Other works are published in Ecotone, Iterant, Shenandoah, Coast/No Coast, ANMLY, AModern, Illustrated PEN, and Drunken Boat. Her next book, Arctic Play, is forthcoming in Fall 2024 from The 3rd Thing.

Mita is the recipient of fellowships and residencies from Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg (HWK), Helmholtz Institute for Functional Marine Biodiversity (HIFMB), Storyknife, Black Earth Institute, Mineral School, and The Arctic Circle. A career educator, she teaches comics and poetry at all levels. She lives in Seattle.
