Amira Hanafi is the author of the book Forgery (Green Lantern Press, 2010) and a number of works of digital literature, including A Dictionary of the Revolution (2017/18), which won the New Media Writing Prize, Denmark’s Public Library Prize for Electronic Literature, and an Artraker Award. Their interactive poem, Mexicans in Canada, won the Grand Prize at the 2023 edition of ArtFields. Amira’s texts have appeared in Fence, American Letters & Commentary, Index on Censorship, Matrix, and Makhzin. Their work has been exhibited at Flux Factory, Les Abattoirs Musée, the British Library, and in the Biennale Casablanca, as well as in a number of online exhibitions. They have taught writing at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Columbia College Chicago, and Coastal Carolina University, and received residency fellowships from Loghaven, Monson Arts, Sundress Academy of the Arts, the Clore Leadership Programme, and the New Museum. From 2021 to 2024, Amira was the Poetry Foundation’s news curator.
Amira holds citizenship in the United States and Egypt and has made home in both countries.
